Summary of Luna PED version applicability

Luna PED 2.x (PIN Entry Device) has served multi-factor and quorum user-role authentication needs of generations of Luna HSMs (Luna HSM 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x), and has gone through hardware and firmware revisions. Older PED firmware does not work with the Luna 7.x Network HSMs.

Luna PEDs that have at least firmware version 2.4.0-3 can be upgraded. If the PED displays a firmware version older than 2.4.0, it cannot be upgraded.

Generally, follow the instructions with the PED update package that you download from the Support Portal. Take note of the information on this page.

CAUTION!   Luna 7 HSMs running firmware version 7.7.x or higher require

•an externally powered PED (connects via a dedicated power cord and power block) having firmware version 2.7.x or higher

or

•a USB powered PED having firmware version 2.9.x or higher .

Firmware 2.9.0 is not newer than firmware 2.7.4; they provide the same maturity and functionality, but targeted to the internally different hardware models. You must not attempt to apply the 2.9.0 update to the older model - the attempt can render the PED permanently unusable.

NOTE   For a host with Windows 10 or newer, use the PED-update utility that is included with PED firmware upgrade 2.7.x (this includes starting from version 2.4.0). The update utility originally supplied with Luna Client 6.2.2 was compatible only with Windows 7 (the version available at that time) and was later superseded.

The Luna 5.x/6.x PED firmware upgrade paths that are supported are:

2.4.0-3 -> 2.4.1-2 -> 2.5.0-3 -> 2.6.0.-6 -> 2.7.1-5 -> 2.7.2-1 (patch)

or

2.4.0-3 -> 2.4.1-2 -> 2.5.0-3 -> 2.6.0.-6 -> 2.7.0-1 -> 2.7.1-5 -> 2.7.2-1 (patch)

or

2.4.0-3 -> 2.4.1-2 -> 2.5.0-3 -> 2.6.0.-6 -> 2.7.4-2 (this is latest possible firmware version that is supported on the old PED hardware (Luna 5\6 PEDs))

This is particularly relevant if you are migrating from older-generation Luna HSMs to Luna 7.x
